Ajay Shah graduated from the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad in the year 1988 as a furniture designer. The same year he set up Exemplar Systems to design, produce and retail convenience furniture.

He then started Circus Design Company in 1990 offering contemporary design solutions for furniture and interiors. Circus Design has since been rechristened as Ajay Shah Design Studio (ASDS) offering strategic design inputs. ASDS has designed a wide range of spaces including boutique chains, gaming spaces, food courts, standalone stores and large format stores. In 2002, the company saw the realization of signage and graphic inclusion in projects starting with a complete way-finding signage package for the Forum Mall eventually leading to the creation in 2006 of Picture This Studio Private Limited to offer graphic and way finding solution designs to clients. ASDS was awarded best retail designer of the year for Carbon store, Pantaloon departmental store and the Lucera brand store in the year 2007 - 2008.
